We’re Grateful for Your Support
Thank to everyone who helped make November a great month at Cook-Wiss. The Book Fair was a huge success. Thanks to the volunteers, to those who donated funds, and to all those who shopped! So many teachers received books on their wish lists and were so appreciative!

Thank You
The first two months of school have been busy and we’re so grateful to all who have volunteered in so many ways to make these two months a success. First, thanks to all who have joined the HSA. It’s a great way to show your support. If you haven’t joined yet, please join or renew now here!
Thanks to everyone who has sent in paper box tops and to all who downloaded the app and have been scanning your receipts. We collected $240 and had $55 scanned in from receipts for our first submission! Keep up the amazing work! All of our Box Tops checks go toward the 5th grade ballroom dancing program! We also had a lot of big, fun, successful events since the start of school—a celebration of the WSC’s completion of a path to the outdoor classroom, the CW 5K, Fall Movie Night, the 50th Anniversary Celebration, and the Art Department’s Annual Harvest Festival! Thank you to all the teachers, staff, neighbors, parents, and family members who organized, volunteered, and came out to support these events.
The 5K raised money for the HSA, which all goes to support school and student activities. The Fall Movie night raised more than $600 for the music department. The 50th Anniversary brought together current families and staff, past students and staff, and neighbors to celebrate CW’s 50-year history as well as what’s to come! It also included a great performance by the CW Choir!
None of this would have been possible without the support of our amazing CW community! Thank you—and we’re looking forward to another great month ahead!

2019 School Selection: High School

The school selection process opened Friday, Sept. 20 and will be open through Nov. 1 at 5 pm. For important dates and more information, visit https://www.philasd.org/findyourfit/

Cook-Wissahickon’s school counselor Ms. Kelly Getts provided all 8th grade students with a copy of the High School Directory. This Directory has information on every School District of Philadelphia public High School, including all of their admission requirements.

“Students should only apply to schools in which they fit within the admissions criteria. By this point, students should be narrowing down their search and choosing 5 School District of Philadelphia schools to apply to,” explains Ms. Getts.

Some schools require essays, auditions, and/or letters of recommendation. Please check specific requirements in the Directory or PSD website. If a student needs a teacher letter of recommendation, s/he must request the letter from the teacher no later than October 1.

You can check out this information sheet about Open Houses at a number of high schools. All of the information is subject to change, but it’s up to date as of today. And be sure to visit https://www.philasd.org/findyourfit/ or consult the High School Directory for specific information about high schools for which you want to schedule tours or shadow days.

Become a 2019-20 HSA Member

All parents, guardians, teachers, and staff members are encouraged to become involved with the Cook-Wissahickon Home and School Association by attending our monthly meetings to coordinate plans to support for our school community and by volunteering throughout the year. Everyone is welcome to participate in monthly HSA meetings. Check out some of our accomplishments from the 2018-19 school year here.

Suggested dues are $5.00 per family, per year.  To become a voting HSA member for the year, you can fill out the Google form online or you can download the 2019-20 HSA Membership Form and print it and have your student return it to his/her homeroom teacher in an envelope marked HSA Membership. Friday NUT (No Uniform Today) Days Start 9/5

Cook-Wissahickon 2019-20 NUT Days

Participating in NUT Days—or No Uniform Today Days—is a great way to help raise funds for the Cook-Wissahickon Home and School Association. For $1, students are able to dress down in appropriate non-uniform clothes for school.

Even if just about half of CW students participate in a NUT Day, we can raise about $250 on any given Friday. This money provides multiple buses to and from field trips or buses for choir students to participate in the Thanksgiving Day parade each year, and more. All money raised goes to the HSA General Fund to support our students.

This year we are again offering pay-ahead options for those who don’t want to have to search for $1 on Fridays. Please download the form here for complete details. You can send payment in with this form or pay via our PayPal account. Please make checks payable to Cook-Wissahickon HSA. You can also pay via https://paypal.me/cookwisshsa mark your child(s) name, teacher, and NUT DAY in the space for special instructions.

The first HSA meeting of the 2019-20 school year will be held on Thursday, September 12 at 6:00 pm at Cook-Wissahickon.
